    Wiley, a leading Washington, DC law firm, has an opening for a Library and Research Services Manager.  This role is responsible for the strategic management and oversight over the firm’s library department and team members and ensuring the delivery of high-quality legal research and reference activities to support firm business needs.

    RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Provide strategic management and oversight over research and reference activities supporting legal, business, and competitive intelligence efforts to ensure that firm business needs are supported
    • Promote the firm’s technical, reference, and research services to firm attorneys and professionals and manage service delivery expectations
    • Serve as internal liaison with external vendors providing augmented research and reference support to the firm
    • Supervise library team members and day-to-day activities of the library and research services department
    • Keep abreast of industry trends, technology, and applications supporting the delivery of legal, research, and reference services
    • Work with practice groups to assess on-going research and reference needs and provide training and support to attorneys and professionals for those products
    • Provide the highest quality technical services to the library and the Firm and manage the technical services staff toward this goal in day-to-day operations
    • Provide ongoing, daily technical support and troubleshooting for users of the integrated library system, including, but not limited to establishing, monitoring and maintaining cataloging standards, providing training and electronic library materials, and advising and identifying research strategies for internal customers
    • Develop and maintain written procedures for technical services
    • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the integrated library system 
    • Research and evaluate print and electronic resources for attorney access, collection development, and vendor implementation and improvement
    • Maintain vendor relations and assist with negotiating licenses for electronic services
    • Manage overall budget and expenses
    • Supervise contract with outsourced loose-leaf filing service
    • Lead the library staff in the organization and development of content for the library and research services portion of the intranet

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • When appropriate, assists with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training new staff in the department
    • Oversees the daily workflow of team members
    • Provides staff with constructive and timely performance feedback and evaluations
    • Handles disciplinary process, including escalating employment matters to the head of the department and the Director of Human Resources when necessary
    • Provides leadership and mentoring to staff, including on-going performance management, feedback and coaching, identification of training opportunities, and preparation of career development plans

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Knowledge of services used to support legal and business research
    • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage and implement multiple initiatives simultaneously in a deadline driven environment
    • Strong diplomatic skills, collegiality, and emotional intelligence with the ability to work effectively across all levels of the firm
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills for management, training, delegation, and performance coaching
    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making abilities
    • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy in work product
    • Must maintain confidentiality of work-related information and materials
    • Resourceful problem-solving skills and ability to create and implement effective procedures
    • Flexibility and willingness to respond to issues during and outside of core business hours

    Requirements

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Bachelor’s degree required.  Masters in Library & Information Science from an ALA accredited program and/or JD degree highly preferred.
    • Minimum eight (8) years plus of relevant law library professional experience.  Previous law firm experience strongly preferred.
    • Strong understanding and knowledge of core legal and business research products, tools, and platforms
    • Demonstrated leadership experience, including mentoring, coaching and leading a team
