    The Reference & Instructional Services Librarian reports directly to the Head of Public Services and serves as a member of the public services team supporting research and learning at the Temple University Beasley School of Law.

    The Reference & Instructional Services Librarian assists the Temple Law Faculty with their research and participates in the library’s liaison program. Additionally, this person participates in and supports a variety of student learning through both formal and informal legal research instruction, as well as outreach. This person helps staff the library service desk, participates in the evening desk rotation as scheduled, and aids in collection development. This person is expected to be actively engaged in professional development. Professional development opportunities may include service on local, regional, or national professional library association committees and working groups, as well as Law Library, Law School, University Libraries, and/or University committees. Performs other duties as assigned.

    About the Law Library:

    The Temple Law Library has an experienced staff dedicated to a high level of service to the Law School, the University, the Philadelphia legal community, and the public. The Law Library actively supports learning opportunities for two student-run journals, trial competitions, trial advocacy and transactional law programs, the Law & Public Policy Program, the Pennsylvania Innocence Project at Temple Law, the Institute for International Law and Public Policy, and the Center for Health Law Policy and Practice, among others. 

    For more than a century, graduates of Temple’s nationally ranked law school have been at the forefront of the regional and national bench and bar. The Law Library supports the teaching and research activities of nearly 700 J.D. and LL.M. students drawn from around the world and 60 full-time faculty members, many with national and international scholarly reputations.     Required Education & Experience:

    • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and an M.L.S. or equivalent degree (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution. Alternatively, in lieu of a J.D., at least 2 years working reference in a law firm environment 

    Required Skills & Abilities: 

    • Ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff in a diverse and inclusive research community. 
    • A thorough grounding in United States legal resources and research methods including using Lexis, Westlaw, and similar resources.
    • Ability to participate competently in law library instruction including course visits.
    • Ability to competently participate in reference services in person, by phone, and by electronic means including email and chat.
    • Ability to participate in library outreach initiatives.
    • Ability to contribute to collection development process.
    • Critical thinking skills.
    • Demonstrated interest in continued professional development.
    • An ability to work both independently and as a team member.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills.
    • Availability to work nights and/or weekends, as necessary.
    • Ability to use or learn Microsoft Office products and online meeting tools including Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
    • Strong attention to detail.
    • An ability to make sound decisions and bring issues to supervisor.
    • A strong customer service orientation.
    • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.

    Preferred:

    • Familiarity with, or experience using, project management tools such as Asana, Trello, Microsoft Projects, or Slack.
    • Enthusiasm for learning new and continuing library innovations.
    • Experience working in circulation.
    • Experience teaching research and resources to patrons.
    • Experience working in an academic library.
    • Experience, or interest, in educational technology planning, implementation, and instruction & assessment.
    • Experience with, or ability to learn, common library technology systems (e.g. LibGuides, Ex Libris Alma, and equivalents). 

    This position is temporarily assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
