    Department purpose and structure

    A&O Research and Library is responsible for supporting fee earners and support staff in their research and resource requirements. Research work spans legal, business and financial work and evolves to match the firm’s changing strategy. The Library function manages all information assets and budgets.

    The US Research team specifically respond to the needs of the US based attorneys across six offices: New York, Washington DC, Boston, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and San Francisco. They also collaborate closely with their global A&O Research & Library colleagues, based in the UK and HK, to ensure a seamless service.

    Role purpose

    Over the past two years A&O has developed an exceptional IP Litigation Practice across all our offices. This expert role will support their complex IP requests and provide public record and literature research and analysis. The Research Analyst (IP) must have full understanding of public and commercial IP resources and the fundamental basics of patent law, including §§ 101, 102, 103, and 112.

    The individual will lead the development of the Practice support through providing training and promotion of resources to attorneys, advising on new products for purchase and mentoring colleagues to enable them to provide complementary support to the Practice.

    Role and responsibilities

    Research tasks and responsibilities include:

    • Providing quality legal, business and financial research support to the global firm;
    • Completing requests for league tables, business and market research;
    • Providing summaries of information from abstracts to short reports;
    • Using data visualization techniques to product presentation quality outputs;
    • Providing research support to external clients either on an ad hoc or project basis;
    • Evaluating new products and making recommendations as and when required;
    • Promoting A&O Research & Library services to new joiners of the firm; and
    • Training fee earners on legal databases to improve their legal research skills.

    Facilitating and contributing to projects including:

    • Providing recommendations for the adoption of new products and services;
    • Advising fee earners and colleagues in the use of new technologies;
    • Identifying opportunities for new research outputs and promoting these to the firm; and
    • Contributing expertise to projects run by other teams such as Know How and Business Development.

    Contribution to the development of the Research Service:

    • Building and maintaining productive relationships with users of the service, undertaking audits of user needs and recommending responses to these;
    • Supervision of day-to-day work of the team, including the appropriate management and mentoring of junior staff as needed;
    • Providing and promoting institutional best practice in A&O’s use of key products;
    • Contributing to the planning and delivery of fee earner and support staff training;
    • Promoting A&O Research & Library to the global firm;
    • Contributing content to the Library Know How wiki and Library intranet; and
    • Contribution to projects as and when required.
    Requirements

    Key requirements:

    Each member of our team possesses skills to complement and benefit the team as a whole. Examples of the additional competencies valued include:

    • Training expertise in delivering and designing presentations, one-to-one support to fee earners, the production and design of training courses;
    • Auditing skills: expertise in designing and conducting surveys; conducting interviews of all seniorities and the ability to analyze results to produce recommendations;
    • Resource management: the ability to review content and functionality and map information solutions to user requirements;
    • Process mapping: work flow analysis through the identification of individual tasks and mapping to skill levels;
    • Technical expertise and fluency in the use of software such as Excel, RSS feeds, SharePoint and data integration systems. Ability to use these platforms to add value to the firm;
    • Ability to curate the use of new platforms/technologies within the firm through testing, advising and training;
    • Ability to abstract, summarize and synthesize complex information to provide action ready information; and
    • The ability to provide consultancy advice on information management issues to internal and external clients.

    Who we are looking for

    The successful individual should demonstrate the following skills and attributes:

    • At least 5 years’ experience in a senior research role;
    • Competency and expertise in legal and business research;
    • Proactive and engaging approach to scoping and managing business development enquiries;
    • Strong commercial awareness and interest; and
    • Excellent all round communication skills, both oral and written.
    • Be a credible, capable professional who is able to build and maintain productive relationships with attorneys, key stakeholders and peers across the business;
    • Adopt and contribute to the global Library systems such as Quest, our workflow system; our intranet and Know How wiki;
