Library Assistant (Serials and Acquisitions)
As part of the library team, the Library Assistant is responsible for all serials and acquisitionsrelated technical processing including intermediate level database maintenance functions using the library automated system, EOS. This position works closely with everyone who performs EOS related duties. The Assistant is also responsible for administrative assistance to all Librarians including but not limited to acquisitions, filing, circulation, interlibrary loan, print and online ready reference. The position reports to the Director of Library Services.
The Library Assistant:
Sets up and maintains serial records, patron records and routing information. Uses a variety of sources, other OPAC’s, and publisher websites to set-up and troubleshoot EOS serial records.
Checks in all serial subscription publications using library automated system and handles distribution of routed material
Processes all new publications using MMWR procedures
Claims new orders and subscription materials that have not been received
Handles routing processes including scanning and distribution of table of contents
Maintains statistics and monthly reporting
Performs data entry and other clerical tasks as needed.
Locates and delivers requested documents as needed.
Consults with a Librarian if uncertain how to handle a situation
Responsible for shelving and maintenance of Philadelphia print collection.
Assists with loose-leaf and pocket part filing and book shifting as needed
Responsible for ILL record maintenance
Assists with ready reference requests
The job requires the following experience/credentials:
At least one year of library technical services experience working with a library automated system.
Basic understanding of bibliographic cataloging records and the interrelationship with serials and acquisitions modules
Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
Intermediate knowledge of computer programs including Word, Outlook and Excel. Good keyboarding skills.
Ability to prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
Ability to operate independently.
Ability to follow directions and report on potential problems
Attention to detail with good organizational skills
Shows initiative and good judgment concerning technical processes
Ability to question inconsistencies and recommend solutions
Knowledge of and ability to perform basic legal research and pull documents from online subscriptions.
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to lift and/or move 25 lbs, climb ladders, push book carts, unpack boxes and move books
The job requires a High School Degree or equivalent, with a Bachelors degree preferred.
